chinese five spice powderrating:
- 1 tsp ground Szechwan peppercorns
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground cloves
- 1/4 tsp ground fennel seeds
- 1 tsp ground star anise
Mix together. Store in an airtight jar if not using straight away. If you are using a grinder to make your own ground spices make sure it is a burr grinder not a blade one as the burr grinder preserves the spice oils. You can substitute ground black peppercorns for szechwan but the szechwan gives the most authentic flavour. You can also substitute star anise seeds if you don't have the regular star anise.
