hoisin sauce

  • 4 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp black bean paste
  • 1 tbsp molasses
  • 2 tsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • a few drops of tabasco (to taste)
  • 2 tsp sesame oil
  • 1/8 tsp ground szechwan peppercorn

Put all the ingredients in a small bowl and put in the microwave for 20 seconds then mix.

I'm a bit worried about a couple of ingredients in this recipe: the garlic powder and the Tabasco, neither of which is usually found in recipes for Chinese food.  Did this recipe originate in the USA, by any chance?

Possibly- I seem to remember a Ken Hom recipe a lot like it. You could always swap the garlic powder for finely chopped garlic and the tabasco for red chili paste
